How to Change TCP/ IP Settings?

TCP/IP stand for Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol which are nothing but a set of networking protocols that allows two or more systems to communicate. It is basic communication language of the internet. It defines how your computer going to communicate with other computers. In order to manage the TCP/IP settings it is recommended to use automated Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). If your computer network supports DHCP then it automatically assigns the IP addresses to the computer on your network. The main advantage of using DHCP is you need not to change your TCP/IP settings if you move your computer from one location to another. DHCP doesn’t require you to manually configure TCP/IP settings such as Windows Internet Name and Domain Name System.

How to enable DHCP or change the other TCP/IP settings?

  • Click the start button and open Network Connections. Now click on the Control Panel type adapter in the search box and then under Network and Sharing Center, click View network connections option.
  • Now right click on the connection for which you want to change and then click Properties option. If you are asked for an administrator password or confirmation, then type the password or provide any confirmation.
  • Now click on the Networking tab. Now under This connection uses the following items option click either Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then click the Properties.
  • Now to specify IPv4 IP address settings follow two steps like to get IP settings automatically using DHCP, click the Obtain an IP address automatically option and then click OK or if you want to specify an IP address click on the Use the following IP address option and then in the IP address, Subnet mask and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.
  • Now to specify IPv6 IP address settings follow two steps like to get IP settings automatically using DHCP, click the Obtain an IPv6 address automatically option and then click OK or if you want to specify an IP address click on the Use the following IPv6 address option and then in the IPv6 address, Subnet prefix length and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.
  • Now to specify IPv6 IP address settings follow two steps like to get DNS server address automatically using DHCP, click the Obtain DNS server address automatically option and then click OK or if you want to specify a DNS server address click on Use the following DNS server address option and then in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes type the addresses of the following primary and secondary DNS servers.
